About the body’s neurological system.
The neurological system is your means of receiving input from various body parts and the outside world. It consists of two parts: the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and peripheral nervous system (all other nerve structures). There are conditions that can simultaneously affect both the central and peripheral nervous systems. In addition, there are neurological disorders which can affect the peripheral nerves and muscles exclusively. They are called peripheral neuropathies and their symptoms include pain, tingling, burning and numbness in the feet or hands. This can be caused by diabetes, trauma, infection or exposure to toxins and metabolic disorders. In some cases, neuropathies can also affect the muscle to which they attach, causing cramps, twitching, pain, weakness along with problems involving joints and movement. There are also conditions which affect muscles exclusively, which could result in pain, weakness, shortness of breath, fatigue and even cardiac abnormalities. At Prime Medical Associates, our specialized training and years of experience have given us the expertise and confidence to diagnose and treat patient with these complicated neurological disorders. In addition, we have established referral relationships with regional academic neurological institutions should you require specialized diagnostic studies and/or treatment protocols.
Your care at Prime Medical Associates starts with a health history and discussion of your symptoms with Dr. Rajan. This will be followed by a comprehensive exam and necessary in-office diagnostic tests. You’ll be glad to know that Dr. Rajan can perform the majority of tests in the comfort and convenience of their office. These include:
ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY (EEG) – This test helps identify and evaluate the cause of seizures and can help diagnose a stroke and intracranial lesions such as an abscess or tumors. EEG is also used to evaluate brain wave activity in persons with brain or spinal cord infections and head injury.
amBulatoRy electroencephalography – This portable and lightweight device is used to record EEG tracings on a cassette or digital recorder on a continuous outpatient basis.
ELECTROMYOGRAPHY (EMG) – This test is performed to diagnose neuromuscular diseases, degenerative nerve diseases and primary muscle disorders such as muscular dystrophy.
NERVE CONDUCTION VELOCITY (NCV) TESTS – An NCV study is performed to diagnose nerve damage or destruction and to evaluate nerve disease.
CAROTID AND TRANSCRANSCRANIAL DOPPLER ULTRASOUND – This diagnostic exam measures blood flowing through the carotid arteries at the base of the brain and assesses the risk of stroke and vascular disease.
SLEEP STUDIES – Prime Medical Associates is equipped with a two room onsite sleep lab and today’s latest digital diagnostic equipment for an accurate and detailed sleep study.
OTHER EXAMS – If Dr. Rajan determines that you need an additional diagnostic exam such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), computed tomography (CT) or computed tomography angiography (CTA), you will be referred to a medical imaging center that is conveniently located less than one mile from Prime Medical Associates. Laboratory tests and genetic testing may also be performed.
